Giorgio Roda took the top spot for both races in UAE, with two fastest laps in tricky track conditions at the Dubai Autodrome. The dusty conditions caused cars to lose grip during the 15-minute session.
The no5 United Autosports Oreca-Gibson took early control of the LMP2 qualifying session, with Roda posting a 1m48.283 lap, 0.2 seconds ahead of the no49 High Class Racing driven by Jens Reno Moller and over a second ahead of George Kutrz in the no4 Crowdstrike Racing by APR.
Roda then improved to a 1m47.996 on the next lap, a time that stood until the chequered flag. Moller also improved his time to a 1m48.531, but was 0.535s behind Roda and couldn’t improve before the chequered flag.
John Falb moved up the order to claim third place for this afternoon’s race with a 1m49.316, with Horst Felbermayr Jr moving up to claim 4th.
Championship leader Roberto Lacorte struggled with grip in the early stages but managed to get two good laps in to finish 7th for Race 1.
After scoring two poles in Sepang, Paul Lanchere took another double pole in Dubai.
The French driver struggled with grip in the early stages of the 15-minute session, losing laps to track limit violations, but came good in the final five minutes.
The early pace was set by Tim Whale in the no94 High Class Racing Ligier, with the no8 Team Virage of Romain Vozniak keeping pace. Whale set a best lap of 1m57.080 after 10-minutes of running with Vozniak just two tenths behind.
However, Lanchere posted a 1m56.438 lap with three minutes left on the clock to claim pole position for race 1 and then posted two more sub 1m57 laps to claim pole for Sunday’s race at the chequered flag.
The no8 Team Virage Ligier finished in second place with a 1m56.801. The no49 High Class Racing will head row 2, with the no13 Inter Europol Competition of Alex Bukhantsov claiming 4th.
FRONT ROW LOCKOUT FOR GETSPEED IN DUBAI
Qualifying for the 20 strong GT grid saw the two Getspeed Mercedes-AMGs take first and second places for both races in Dubai, with Abdulla Ali Al-Khelaifi in the no37 QMMF by Getspeed take a double pole ahead of Steve Jans in the no9 Mercedes-AMG.
The session started with several cars taking the top spot on the timing screens before Jans posted a 2m00.408 lap on his first fast lap. Championship leader Dustin Scott Blattner made a bid for the pole in the no74 Kessel Racing Ferrari with a 2m00.183 but was bumped down a place when Jans posted the first sub 2-minute lap with a 1m59.771.
Al-Khelaifi then made a bid for pole, but Track Limits denied the Qatari driver. However, at the chequered flag the no37 Mercedes-AMG went to the top of the timing screens with a 1m59.595, 0.176s ahead of the no9 car in second place. The no74 Ferrari will start this afternoon’s race in third, with the no87 Origine Motorsport Porsche 911 of Bo Yuan also on Row 2.
