Maserati MSG Racing completed a positive pre-season testing program at Valencia’s Circuit Ricardo Tormo to conclude preparations for Season 9 of the FIA Formula E World Championship.
The team set out to establish an initial performance baseline for its 2023 challenger, the Maserati Tipo Folgore, and began to target performance running as the test unfolded.
Driver, Maximilian Günther, led the way on the opening day after setting the pace in Tuesday’s morning and afternoon sessions while team-mate, Edoardo Mortara, also starred inside the top five.
On Wednesday, the duo continued to enhance their knowledge of the Gen3 package by participating in a trial weekend format, consisting of one practice session, qualifying, and a 25-lap race.
Max ended both practice and qualifying with the fastest lap times and finished second in the mock race, with Edo also showing promise in a consistent, reliable run to sixth.
In the final test session of Wednesday, Max again led the way while Edo was fifth in the field of 22.
A one-hour window of testing on Thursday afternoon – in which Edo was fourth – preceded the final chapter of pre-season testing on Friday which was divided into two sessions totalling six hours of track time.
The team completed 106 laps on the final morning en route to fourth and fifth and added 101 laps in the afternoon, in which Max posted the fastest lap of the week, a 1:25.127 run.
With pre-campaign preparations now complete, Formula E will reconvene on Saturday, 14 January 2023 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to contest the first race of Season 9, the Mexico City E-Prix.
James Rossiter, Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing “This week has been a huge learning curve for us. With both cars on track, the amount of data we’ve been able to accumulate, and compile has been immense. At this stage, our findings have been very positive, and we’ve already learned a great deal about Gen3 Formula E and our technical package. With only four weeks to go until the first race of the season, we need to make sure that we’re fully prepared so we can be as competitive as possible. This week, we’ve seen such great potential from the Maserati MSG Racing team and both of our drivers, and I’m very excited to see how we line up in Mexico City.”
Edoardo Mortara, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing “This week of testing has been intense but overall positive, and although we’re still understanding the finer points of the Gen3, I think we are in a strong position. At this stage, we know that we are heading in the right direction, but we still have a lot to learn and a plenty of work to do ahead of Mexico City. From here, we will fully analyse our data, debrief and continue to gather simulations from HQ. But at this stage, I’m happy and I think we should be pleased with our performance as a team.”
Maximilian Günther, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing “Overall, we have had a very positive week of testing here in Valencia. When developing a new car, it’s really important to collect as much data as possible and to get a good feel for the car, and I believe that we have achieved this over the past few days. Since the start of the week, we’ve taken some very good steps and I feel comfortable with the direction in which we are heading. Now, we just need to refine some aspects of our performance and continue with our preparations ahead of the first race of the season in Mexico.”
Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse “It was fantastic to be here in Valencia for our first official test with the new Maserati Tipo Folgore. The car looks very competitive and its performance is evident - having Max and Edo put in the times we’ve seen throughout the week, is a great start to our first season back in racing and hopefully gives us a good indication of what we’re capable of achieving this season. We can see the team is working incredibly well together which is going to be fundamental to getting results in this exciting new era of Formula E.”
