Jump-setting Swedes David Ahman and Jonathan Hellvig win men’s gold while and Julia Sude and Isabel Schneider claim first victory in women’s event The second Beach Pro Tour Challenge event in Dubai ended in glory for David Ahman and Jonathan Hellvig and Julia Sude and Isabel Schneider as the two sides took gold on the final day of breathless competition on the city’s Kite Beach. Swedes Hellvig, 21, and 20-year-old Ahman arrived as top seeds in the competition following a successful summer that saw them crowned European champions. In Dubai, the youngsters were in top form, winning all six matches and dropping just one set with their gold medal coming courtesy of a 21-17, 21-12 victory over Argentinian brothers Nicolas and Tomas Capogrosso in the final. “It sure feels amazing to be here and manage to win,” Ahman said after the final. “It’s been tough and really warm, but we made it. We always try to have fun and that definitely helps us. We do our thing and play our style of volleyball. When we do that well, it’s both fun and it works.” Hellvig added: “Argentina are a really tough team to play against. They hit really hard and really high, so it’s hard to stop them when they get to the net. I think the key for us was that we managed to put some pressure on the serve, so they could not get the best opportunities to hit.” There was another medal for the USA after their gold in the previous event, with Taylor Crabb and Paul Lotman securing third place on the podium. The Americans saw off the challenge of Switzerland’s Adrian Heidrich and Leo Dillier 21-15, 21-18. Schneider wins first international gold Sude and Schneider finished fifth in the first event last week – the first time the pair were on the same side of the sand together – and the experienced German duo secured their first gold medal of their new partnership thanks to a straight sets (21-17, 21-14) victory over Americans Madelyne Anderson and Molly Turner. For Schneider, it was the defender’s first international gold medal of a career that started on the World Tour back in 2013. “It’s unbelievable,” said the 31-year-old. “I had a couple of semi-finals before, but I worked hard to get her [the medal] and I am super happy that we could win this. I already saw the medal and I was like, ‘yeah, I want this!’, and now I have no words, to be honest.” Sude, who added to her bronze medal won at the Hamburg Elite 16 earlier this season, said: “It is a little bit unreal. I think it was the first match we started pushing from the beginning. We had a lot of three-set battles, so we were very prepared for another hard battle, but it turned out better than expected.” The bronze medal match was a repeat of last week’s – but there were different victors this time as Thailand’s Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee and Taravadee Naraphornrapat took home the hardware for third place, beating Katie Horton and Julia Scoles of the USA 21-10, 21-18. The first Beach Pro Tour Challenge event in Dubai saw Americans Andy Benesh and Miles Partain make BPT history while Czech duo Barbara Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova take the women’s title The first ever Beach Pro Tour event in Dubai saw teams from the United States and the Czech Republic win gold on a historic evening at Kite Beach. Andy Benesh and Miles Partain became the first American men’s team to win a Beach Pro Tour medal at any level since the competition began following their win over Ukrainain pair Sergiy Popov and Eduard Reznik. The US pair, who came through qualification, secured an eighth successive win of the competition by beating their European opponents 21-17, 21-15 in the gold medal match. “It’s really special that we started from the qualifier and battled all the way to get the gold medal. I think we did a really good job at taking it one point at a time,” said Partain, who at 20 is the second youngest winner of a Beach Pro Tour medal. “Now we get to celebrate for a couple of hours and then we are back in the qualifiers on Thursday. It’s an adventure. It’s a mystery and you never know how it’s going to go and that’s what makes it fun.” Blocker Benesh said: “I am very proud of our federation for doing a great job supporting us. We, the men, have been lacking a little bit and we are trying to find our way back on the map. “We believe in ourselves. We always have that hope, but not really expecting anything. We are just taking it moment by moment. Obviously, we want to get to a certain level, but that’s going to come over time.” Brazilian legend and 2016 Olympian Pedro Solberg returned to the podium at international level, winning bronze with partner 10 years his senior, Arthur Mariano. The pair defeated Evan Cory and Logan Webber in the fight for third, 15-21, 21-18, 15-12. Czechs on top in women’s competition Hermannova and Stochlova were among the favourites for the title once the main draw began last Friday. The Czech pair, who won a silver medal at the Challenge event in Agadir earlier in the Beach Pro Tour season, fought back to win women’s final against Meimei Lin and Xinyi Xia of China in three sets, 18-21, 21-17, 15-12. Stochlova told Volleyball World: “In the first two sets I made serving errors at important moments, and in the third set till 11-11 each of my serves went into the net or three metres out. “It was tough on the mind. But our coach Sebastian teaches us how to have fun during the matches and I think it’s visible on the court, even in games like this when we don’t feel great “It has been a pretty amazing journey for me and I’m enjoying it.” Two-time Olympian Hermannova added: “Marie stayed positive and cheered after every ball, even when it was not perfect. She kept me in a positive mood through the whole match and deserves credit for it. “It has been a hard year for sure, with some injuries and everything, but we managed to keep it on a high level and I am very proud of it. Beach Pro Tour makes its first stop in Dubai with the first of two Challenge events taking place in the United Arab Emirates The most active two events on the Beach Pro Tour kicked off in Dubai on Saturday with the first of the back-to-back Challenge events on Kite Beach. It is the first time on the Beach Pro Tour calendar that there have been successive tournaments in the same location, with athletes gracing the golden sands of Kite Beach between 22-25 and 27-30 October. Run by Volleyball World in partnership with the Dubai Sports Council, and in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates Volleyball Federation, the two events will see athletes invited to give their professional advice on how the sport can foster an active and healthy lifestyle. During the days of competition, fans and media will learn just how beneficial participating in the sport can be for the body and mind. The first in a series of beach clinics was held on the centre court on Friday. Organised by local beach volleyball club Esperia, 25 participants were treated to tutorials from two professional coaches, Ryan Hutchinson and Melissa Done, and Brazilian volleyball legend and FIVB Ambassador Giba. “It’s great to be able to get on the sand, help the coaches and be a part of this event on Kite Beach,” said the 2004 Olympic indoor champion. “There is a real passion for volleyball in Dubai and I am really looking forward to the events, as well as giving something back to the local players.” Giba was also on hand to host a special media event where national and international journalists were given an insight into how to play beach volleyball by main draw teams Bara Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova of the Czech Republic and Norway’s Emilie Olimstad and Sunniva Helland-Hansen as well as Ahmed Al Houli and Humaid Binsaud from two of teams representing the United Arab Emirates. Entertaining first day of main draw complete The home fans who came to Kite Beach hoping to see victories for the home team were unable to help their team to victory as Al Houli and teammate Salem Mohammed lost both of their matches on the centre court as the main draw begun on Sunday. Helland-Hansen and Olimstad and Hermannova and Stochlova were among the women’s teams who won both matches to book themselves a place in Last-16. On the men’s side, among those duos who won twice to secure a spot in the Last-16 were top seeds from Italy, Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi, French brothers Quincy and Calvin Aye and Brazil’s Pedro Solberg and Arthur Mariano. Monday will see the elimination phase get under way in the women’s and men’s competition with the day cumulating in the quarter-finals. [2022 年 10 月 21 日，香港]: 香港欖球總會（欖總）今日宣佈已獲得政府批准，可在 2022 年「國泰航空/滙豐香港國際七人欖球賽」舉行期間（即 11 月 4 日至 6 日）在香港大球場的觀眾席範圍內進食。 參與 2022 年「國泰航空/滙豐香港國際七人欖球賽」的入場人士現可在看台座位上進食及飲用包括酒精在內的飲料。 欖總行政總裁麥偉彬先生（Robbie McRobbie）表示：「我們很高興成功爭取在『七欖』舉行期間提供食品供應服務。為期三日，集現場飲食、音樂和精彩競技的七人欖球賽定必能夠炒熱氣氛。」 基於健康及安全考量，所有參與 2022 年「國泰航空/滙豐香港國際七人欖球賽」的入場人士均須在進入大球場前出示同日完成的陰性快速抗原測試結果，否則將被拒絕進入大球場。 入場人士如選擇進行快速抗原測試，必須在該測試捧上紀錄其姓名和測試日期及時間，再拍攝照片並儲存在其手機，以便進入大球場前供場內工作人員查看。 除此之外，入場人士亦須遵守基本的防疫措施，包括在入場前使用「安心出行」流動應用程式掃描場所二維碼、符合「疫苗通行證」規定的適用疫苗接種要求，以及在飲食以外的任何時間佩戴口罩。 賽事即將在兩星期後舉行，獲准進食的安排令活動體驗及時提升，加上今年 11 月的「七欖」入座上限為百分之 85，剩餘的門票有限，欲購從速。 2022 年「國泰航空/滙豐香港國際七人欖球賽」門票可於香港欖球總會官方售票網站 www.tickets.hkrugby.com 購買。 票價維持 2019 年的價格，分別 成人三日門票1,950 元和 12 歲及以下的兒童三日門票 950 元，門票售完即止。 Information and photo source : Elite Step Asia / HKRU
