Sunday 10 April 2022 – Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans claimed back-to-back victories in the Rome E-Prix double-header of races with a dramatic win in Round 5 following yesterday’s first place finish in Round 4 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The Kiwi driver led Poleman Jean-Éric Vergne (DS TECHEETAH) in second and Envision Racing's Robin Frijns who couldn’t top yesterday’s second place finish to come home in third. As it happened: DS TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne pulled away from Pole while his former teammate and TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team driver André Lotterer passed Avalanche Andretti's Jake Dennis into second. By the top of the hill and Turn 7, Dennis had reclaimed second, dropping Lotterer back down to third. With a collision between Mahindra Racing's Alex Sims and Nissan e.dams’ Max Günther, the German driver retired to the pits, ending his race inside five minutes. Despite setting the fastest lap in Qualifying earlier in the day, Jake Dennis started losing ground after Lotterer attacked at Turn 7, reclaiming second. Shortly after, yesterday's race winner Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) slipped past into third. Squeezing into Turn 4 side by side, standings leader and ROKiT Venturi Racing driver Edoardo Mortara tried to pass DS TECHEETAH's Antonio Felix da Costa, with the Portuguese racer closing the door on the Swiss, damaging the front wing of his car. Mortara then clipped the wall on Turn 19 and coasted to safety, retiring from the race with a suspected driveshaft failure. For home race hero and DRAGON/PENSKE AUTOSPORT, the Italian driver Antionio Giovinazzi stopped on track between Turn 8 and 9, resulting in the deployment of the Porsche Taycan Safety Car. With 24 minutes left on the clock, the Safety Car was brought in and the racing commenced. Poleman Vergne led Evans for less than a lap before the opportunist Evans overtook into Turn 4 to take the lead. Dennis continued to slip down the order to seventh as the race passed the halfway mark. At the front, Evans continued to lead Vergne, with Porsche's Lotterer in second and Envision's Robin Frijns in third. Enjoying the benefit of the extra power gained through his eight-minute ATTACK MODE, Robin Frijns made his way up the order and took race leader Evans up the hill on Turn 7. Paying the price for closing the door earlier on Mortara, da Costa received a five minute time penalty while back at the front, Lotterer was looking to take the lead with extra power gained through ATTACK MODE. Now in second, the German driver was close on the tail of Frijns who was desperately trying to hold on to the lead. With seconds of his ATTACK MODE power left, Lotterer made his move on Frijns to take the lead into Turn 4. Now setting the pace, the German driver was closing in on his first victory in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with 10 minutes left on the clock. After a short Safety Car while Sims' Mahindra car was recovered after a spin on Turn 14, the racing was back under way - now with 5m15s of TAG Heuer Added Time to extend the race. Saving his ATTACK MODE until the end of the race, Evans took the boost with less than eight minutes of the race remaining. With extra power, Evans went after Lotterer, hunting the German driver before taking the lead on the hill up to Turn 7. With Evans holding firm, Vergne slipped past his former teammate Lotterer, jumping to second, before Frijns made a move on the German to knock him off the podium and into fourth. With Envision Racing's Nick Cassidy in the wall at the top of Turn 7, the Safety Car made a brief appearance before coming in to leave a last lap dash for the finish. With Evans out in front and Vergne close behind, the Frenchman was on the attack to regain his lead. Unable to catch Evans, the Jaguar driver crossed the line victorious, once again, for the second time in the Rome double-header. Close behind, Vergne came in second with Envision's Frijns back on the Rome podium in third. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship moves onto Monaco for Round 6 on 30 April. I just want to thank everyone at the team because the last eight weeks have been insane with the amount of work that has gone in. I didn't know if we could manage two - double-headers are tricky to back up - but we showed good quality. The race was a carbon copy from yesterday, the car was working perfectly. It was trickier today because of the temperature and the longer ATTACK mode, I almost got caught out with that during the safety car, but a huge thanks to everyone on the team and hopefully this isn't just a one-off but it feels good. "It has been a big couple of days. It was what we wanted, you dream about that but to try and pull it off is usually quite unrealistic. We are back as a team, I am back towards the top, so it is good times." JEAN-ÉRIC VERGNE, DS TECHEETAH, #25 said: "It was a chaotic race. I didn't know what was happening in terms of our strategy, the Jaguar and Mitch were way too fast this weekend. I hope that is only going to be a one-off from their side, otherwise it might be difficult to beat them. Today it was impossible. I am fairly happy with second, it was the best I could do, but I am going to urge my team to do better if we want to fight for wins because every time there is someone stronger than us. It is not good enough so we need to work hard in Monaco to be the best. "The Championship is still very long, consistency is key, and I think we were fairly consistent throughout the season, but if we want to win we need to have more pace. Leading the Championship at this race, everyone will have forgotten if you don't win the Championship, so it is at the end that matters." ROBIN FRIJNS, ENVISION RACING, #4 said: "It is a good weekend, it was a good race. It was very tricky in Turn 15, I didn't know this at the beginning. I felt really comfortable and the team told me I had a bit more energy than the others around me, so my plan was to go a bit further into the top three, and I overtook Jake there. We both went wide, then I noticed the track was breaking up massively. I feel a bit sorry for Jake that we both went wide and he lost his position, that definitely wasn't the plan, but at the end of the day we were fighting for podium positions which is a victory for us. Saturday 9 April 2022 – Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans claimed victory on the streets of Rome for the second time in his ABB FIA Formula E World Championship career, pulling away from the field leading Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns and Mercedes-EQ's Stoffel Vandoorne in third. As it happened: Poleman Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes-EQ) held onto the lead, fending off Envision Racing's Robin Frijns in P2 as the pack moved around the 19-turn, 3.385km Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR street circuit in Rome. Nudged from behind by ROKiT Venturi's Edoardo Mortara, Mahindra Racing's Oliver Rowland hit the barrier on Turn 7, causing cars to back up behind the British driver. Shortly after, Nissan e.dams' Max Guenther crashed into the barrier on Turn 11, bringing the Porsche Taycan Safety Car out while his stricken race car was recovered. With 35 minutes left on the clock, racing commenced with Vandoorne out in front leading Frijns and Mercedes-EQ Nyck de Vries. Sandwiched between the Mercedes-EQ drivers, Robin Frijns was fighting for the lead, biding his time to make a move on Vandoorne. With 29 minutes remaining, DS TECHEETAH's Antonio Felix da Costa in fourth took ATTACK MODE to use the extra power to close in on the top three. Down into Turn 4, Frijns made his move on Vandoorne, pulling past the Mercedes driver on the inside of the turn to take the lead. The following lap, both Mercedes' drivers took ATTACK MODE - allowing da Costa to move into second - to close in on race leader Frijns. With his ATTACK MODE used and Vandoorne still in the higher power mode, the Mercedes driver slipped into second behind Frijns. Despite contending for the lead early on, da Costa continued to slip down the order before a knock from Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis on Turn 4 set him further back behind the British driver and Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans. Back at the front, Vandoorne and Frijns continued to trade places with Frijns using his ATTACK MODE between Turn 3 and 4 to pass the Belgian driver and hold the Mercedes driver at bay in second. With 14 minutes left on the clock, Vandoorne blasted past Frijns on the uphill section between Turn 6 and 7 in a beautifully-executed move using ATTACK MODE, to take the lead. Despite starting in third, de Vries appeared to be struggling, slipping down the order. Back at the front, Jaguar's Mitch Evans had made his way up from ninth and - using extra power from ATTACK MODE - made a successful move on Vandoorne and Frijns to take the lead. Evans - a one-time winner in Rome - was clear of the pack, out in front by a comfortable margin. After the Safety Car outing earlier in the race, the race was extended by 5m15s of TAG Heuer Added Time. After slipping down, Vandoorne used his FANBOOST to climb back up the order, eventually settling behind Evans in second. Now into added time, Evans held firm at the front, followed by Vandoorne and DS TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne who'd made his way into third. Close together Vergne led Frijns and Mortara in the battle for third. Around the Obelisk, Frijns passed Vergne to take third with less than two minutes of added time left. In a flat-out fight on the final lap, Evans held the lead on Frijns and Vandoorne in third. Round 5 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship takes place tomorrow in Rome. Returning fans will have plenty to cheer as DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT’s Italian driver, Antonio Giovinazzi, makes his home race debut in Formula E. Street racing hadn't been a part of Roman culture for 62 years prior to Formula E visiting in 2018, and the track uses parts of the old Tre Fontane circuit from the 1920s - with the start line on Via delle Tre Fontane. The 19-turn 3.385km Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR, one of the longest on the ABB Formula E calendar, is a mix of high-speed corners, tight complex sections and undulations with plenty of opportunities for overtaking. The 22 all-electric race cars will speed around landmarks including the Palazzo dei Congressi and Piazzale Marconi as the race navigates the iconic Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, known as the "Square Coliseum" with the Ninfeo Park forming part of the circuit’s perimeter. A new update for this year sees the start moved to Viale delle Tre Fontane between Turns 3 and 4 with the finish on the approach to Turn 19 on Viale dell'Industria. Seven of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers are currently registered to race the new Gen3 car from Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Gen3 race car to be officially unveiled to the public on 28 April in Monaco ahead of the 2022 Monaco E-Prix The all-electric Gen3 race car is the “pinnacle of performance, efficiency and sustainability” and is Formula E’s most powerful, lightest and fastest race car to date. Thursday 31 March 2022 – Seven of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers have registered with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to race the new Gen3 car which debuts next season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The Gen3 race car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Yacht Club de Monaco on 28 April ahead of the Monaco E-Prix on 30 April. The manufacturers currently confirmed for the Gen3 era of Formula E are: DS Automobiles, France Jaguar, United Kingdom Mahindra Racing, India Maserati, Italy NIO 333, United Kingdom and China Nissan, Japan Porsche, Germany The full list of teams will be released later in 2022. About the Gen3 race car: The world’s most efficient racing car – at least 40% of the energy used within a race will be produced by regenerative braking during the race. The first formula car with both front and rear powertrains: a new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capability of the current Gen2 to a total of 600kW. The first formula car that will not feature rear hydraulic brakes due to the addition of the front powertrain and its regenerative capability. An electric motor delivering up to 350kw of power (470BHP), capable of a top speed of 200mph (320 km/h), with a power-to-weight ratio that is twice as efficient as an equivalent 470BHP internal combustion engine (ICE). LONDON, UK. Monday 28 March 2022 – Formula E today announced the return of the Formula E: Accelerate esports competition and launched the application process at www.FIAFormulaE.com/Accelerate. The ‘Road to the London Final’ qualification series will take place online alongside in-person qualifiers in the week leading up to each of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship E-Prix races in Rome (9 & 10 April), Monaco (30 April), Berlin (14 & 15 May), Jakarta (4 June), Vancouver (2 July) and New York (16 & 17 July). Nine of the drivers recording fastest laps times in the qualification series will be invited to the finals at the London E-Prix weekend (30 & 31 July). Formula E will then host the Accelerate final in-person during the London E-Prix weekend. The top three winners of the final in London will receive a share of 100,000 Euro prize fund, and VIP tickets to the Seoul E-Prix as well as the chance to take part in a Formula E driving experience at pre-season testing in Valencia which will take the esports podium from sim rig to race seat.
