SINGAPORE, 2nd May 2021 – Hyo Joo Kim became the sixth player from South Korea to lift the HSBC Women’s World Championship trophy after yet another dramatic finish at Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore. Dubbed ‘Asia’s Major’, the 2021 edition of the HSBC Women’s World Championship certainly didn’t disappoint, with the lead frequently changing hands in the closing stages of the tournament as Kim, Inbee Park and Hannah Green jostled for position at the top of the leaderboard. But safely in the clubhouse, it was Kim’s final round of 64 that saw the 25-year old emerge victorious and end a five-year wait for her fouth LPGA Tour win, together with the US$ 240,000 winner’s cheque. “Winning after such a long time, it feels like my first win of all. It feels like a dream at this moment! “I thought everybody had the opportunity to win. I didn't make any mistakes on the front nine, and as I went to the back nine, I felt I might be able to win it. “My goal this year was to get a win, and I'm glad I already achieved that. While I was playing on the KLPGA Tour last year, I honed my skills and wanted to adapt them to this year on the LPGA, and I'm very happy that these results came out,” said Kim, who finished at 17-under par. The result was a blow to Green. An eagle on the par-four 14th saw the Australian take the outright lead, and it looked as though the 24-year old from Perth had a third LPGA win in the bag. But bogeys on both the 17th and 18th holes and round of 69 handed a one-shot victory to Kim, leaving Green to reflect on what might have been. “I didn't really feel like I was in it until I holed the shot on 14. That was a nice way to get my momentum. Made a really good putt on 16 to make birdie, but obviously pretty disappointed to have two 3-putts finishing. Felt a little nerves on the last, which is nice, because I guess having the spectators out there it kind of meant something to me. So I'm obviously very close, so I just hope that I can continue this momentum and who knows, have a good result next week,” said Green. Overnight leader Xiyu Lin’s quest for a maiden tournament win continues with the 25-year old from China undoubtably getting closer. A graduate of the CGA-HSBC China Junior Golf programme and a sponsor invite to this year’s tournament, her third place finish is testament to the impact the programme continues to have on golf development in China. “Right now I'm definitely a little sad but overall if I just calm down and think through this week, I'm very grateful for what I've done. If you told me at the beginning of the week, I'm going to do that well, like finish top three, I'll be like, ‘are you kidding’.” Reflecting on the support lent to her by tournament sponsor HSBC, Lin added: “Throughout my whole career, HSBC is definitely one of [a few] sponsors that is participating in every part of my career. The first year being a rookie on Tour, I got one sponsor invite to play in this tournament, and then this year, same. I just feel really grateful that we have that kind of company supporting the whole of golf in China.” Patty Tavatanakit saved her best until last. After a modest start to the week, the 21-year old major winner from Bangkok played herself right into contention on the final day in Singapore. Her round of seven under par 65 saw her join Lin in a share of third place. Playing for the first time in the tournament, courtesy of a sponsor invitation, the Tour rookie will be pleased she was able to put up such a strong challenge. Reflecting on her week in Singapore before the Tour moves onto Thailand next week, Tavatanakit said: “I'm already confident with my game ever since ANA and I feel like I can compete out there even more. If anything, I don't want to get too ahead of myself, because next week, I know the course, I've played there. It's my home country. Obviously there's a little bit more pressure because everyone wants me to play well, but you know, seeing what I can do out here and try to carry it on to next week, it's going to be important.” Also in third place is Inbee Park who was in imperious form as she challenged for a third title in Singapore but dropped shots on the 13th and 16th holes saw the lead get away from her. Closing with a birdie on the last, she signed for two under par 70. “I feel like I played great this week. Just a couple of bad holes, that's it. Had a couple of bad shots, that's it. But I really enjoyed myself in Singapore. I played very well all week, so very happy with it,” said Park. In sixth place was fellow South Korean So Yeon Ryu at 12-under par, while seventh place was shared by Carlota Ciganda of Spain, In Gee Chun of Korea, Lydia Ko of New Zealand and Gaby Lopez of Mexico. SINGAPORE, 29th April 2021 – World No.2 Inbee Park showed her class on the first day of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, finishing with an eight-under par score of 64 to put her at the top of the leader board, one shot ahead of fellow South Korean Hee Young Park. Already a multiple winner at Sentosa Golf Club, Park’s reputation as a formidable putter stood up to the test, with four birdies on both the front and back nine holes. The reigning Olympic champion comes to Singapore is in a rich vein of form having won the Kia Classic at the start of the year and tied for second place in the Lotte Championship a fortnight ago. Park, who has her husband Gi as her caddy this week, credited him with her success in the first round: “I think I'm going to give him ten [out of ten] and probably ten for the rest of the week because I'm really thankful that he's doing this for me and in this heat. It's very tough conditions. I'm just really thankful that he's carrying the bag. I don't need an exact number. I don't need anything. I just need him next to me, that's all, just carrying the bag. “We're both really enjoying ourselves out there. I didn't even know what score I was shooting today. I was going hole-by-hole like it's 14 to go, 13 to go, three to go. I just had fun out there with him. I hit a lot of fairways and greens. It was really a stress-free round and I was able to read the putts really well with him and that helped.” Looking back to her HSBC Women’s World Championship wins in 2015 and 2017, she added: “It definitely reminded me of some good memories when I was playing good out there today. If I can raise this trophy again this time, I definitely thought about it. The good memories definitely make me concentrate even harder.” Hee Young Park’s round of 65 included a bogey on the par-three seventh hole and an eagle on the par-four tenth. Playing in her 14th year on the LPGA Tour, she will see this as an opportunity to build on her record of three LPGA wins. Playing alongside Mirim Lee and Megan Khang, Hee Young Park said: “I just tried to survive with this heat in Singapore. I love it, but after I played the front nine, I had a good moment on ten. Made an eagle. That really makes everything easier, less pressure and then I played with nice people, nice girls today and we tried to have fun with this hot weather. So, I think everything goes, like everything easy. Hit the fairways and greens and easy to make two-putt and sometimes birdie.” Two shots further back and tied in third place are Caroline Masson and Sophia Popov of Germany, Hyo Joo Kim and So Yeon Ryu of South Korea and Xiyu Lin of China. Caroline Masson, who has shown consistent form in recent visits to Singapore, holed eight birdies with three bogeys. Speaking about competing back in Singapore, she said: “It feels good. Even though it's not back to normal, it feels like a step in the right direction for us to come back overseas and play. You know, Asia is always huge. It's a big market and they are great tournaments. It's just nice to be back here. It's hot but I love it and I just want to embrace it and appreciate the opportunity of being here and I think that's what I'm going to do the next couple of weeks.” Starting in the first flight of the day at 7:25 a.m., it was tournament debutant Sophia Popov who took the early clubhouse lead. Seven birdies, with a bogey either side of the turn, leave her in a strong position after day one on her first visit to Singapore. Asked how she was feeling about her first round, Popov said: “A lot better now that I'm in the clubhouse and out of the heat. But no, I feel great. I had a really solid start. I haven't played this course before. I haven't been here; it's my first time. So, it was really nice. I enjoyed it and yeah, definitely excited about having a good start.” The 28-year old shot to international stardom last August following her major victory at the AIG Women’s British Open and is clearly relishing the opportunities that such a win presents. “It's definitely been a very cool experience for me. I think I've watched this tournament over the years and saw the other girls playing and I was never able to qualify for it. I think that's one of the perks that came with winning the AIG Women's Open last year. I think that's just been kind of almost like a bonus week for me again just being able to enjoy being out here with the Top-70 girls right now and I'm playing on a really, really nice golf course,” said Popov. Brittany Altomare, Gaby Lopez, Su Oh, Jeongeun Lee6, Shanshan Feng and Amy Yang share eighth place with a four-under par score of 68 in round one. For defending champion Sung Hyun Park, it was a day to forget. The South Korean, who enjoys a strong following in the Lion City, wasn’t able to repeat the form she showed back in 2019 carding a six-over par round of 78. Singapore’s Amanda Tan is two shots ahead of her at four-over par and tied in 66th place. SINGAPORE, 27 April 2021 – With this week’s HSBC Women’s World Championship marking the LPGA Tour’s first tournament in Asia since November 2019, players had the chance to reacquaint themselves with both course and conditions at Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore today. Even with the 17-hour flight from Los Angeles to the Garden City and the need to adhere to strict safety protocols throughout their stay, spirits were high amongst players. Out to defend her title is Sung Hyun Park, who earned her sixth-career victory on Tour at Asia’s Major back in 2019. Park said: “It's nice to be back in Singapore again. It still is very hot, so I've been sweating a lot the entire day. The course looks like it's in really good condition. I noticed a couple changes in some of the holes so it was a good, fun practice round today. “Winning in 2019 was a huge confidence boost.
