Five appointed athletes now join five elected members on the Commission Today, the FIVB announced the full composition of the gender and discipline-balanced FIVB Athletes’ Commission, following the appointment of the remaining five members by the FIVB Board of Administration of the candidates proposed by the FIVB President. For the 2021-2024 period, the Athletes’ Commission will be composed of five elected and five appointed members who act as an essential link between the players and the FIVB to ensure that the players’ voices are represented. Additionally, the Commission will have equal gender representation amongst its membership, and the same number of representatives from volleyball and beach volleyball. Rugby sevens fans around the world can mark their calendars and begin to look forward to the highly anticipated return of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series as plans are unveiled for the 2021 Series. Given the unique circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 global pandemic, together with the spectacle of the Olympic Games in July, World Rugby has worked closely together with partners, host organisations and participating unions to agree a compact and highly impactful Series in 2021. The condensed 2021 Series schedule includes five women’s and four men’s rounds, with the addition of a further two potential men’s events under discussion. The 2021 Series kicks off with back-to-back women’s events in Marcoussis, Paris on 15-16 and 22-23 May. The Series will then take a break for the countdown to the Olympic Games and recommence with a men’s event in Singapore on 29-30 October, followed by joint men’s and women’s rounds in Hong Kong on 5-7 November, Dubai on 3-4 December, followed by an exciting climax in Cape Town on 10-12 December. Detailed discussions are continuing with London and Vancouver on the viability of hosting men’s events in the window following the Olympic Games and prior to the HSBC Singapore Sevens in October and further updates to the schedule will be given when available. The health and wellbeing of players, fans and the wider community remains top priority and both World Rugby and the host organisations will work closely with the relevant national governments and health agencies to ensure the safe and secure delivery of the events. New Zealand are the reigning champions of both the women's and men's Series after being crowned winners of the 2020 edition, which was brought to an early conclusion with five of the eight women’s rounds and six of the 10 men’s rounds successfully completed prior to the onset of the pandemic. In the men’s Series, Japan will join as a core team following their promotion from the inaugural HSBC World Rugby Challenger Series in 2020, while it has been agreed that in this Olympic year, the England, Scotland and Wales teams will combine to compete as ‘GB Sevens’ in both the men’s and women’s Series’ in 2021. This will create two additional invitational places for teams to participate in the men’s 2021 Series events, with invitational teams to be announced in due course. The highly dynamic, skillful and athletic short form version of the game has been a huge hit around the globe since the Series was introduced in 1999, with its popularity growing year-on-year in a strong upwards curve, particularly in emerging rugby nations. Combining raw talent with consistency, she made no less than 12 top-10 finishes in 2019, including four wins and two majors. Tying for third at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, the 25-year old will surely be backing herself to claim the top prize in 2021. Champion in 2015 and 2017 and LPGA Hall of Famer, Inbee Park needs little introduction. With 20 LPGA Tour wins under her belt, seven majors and an Olympic gold medal, she knows better than anyone what it takes to win and will be one to watch on the Tanjong Course. Danielle Kang returns to Singapore having come ever so close in 2018, before having to settle for tiedsecond place behind compatriot and friend Michelle Wie. Currently ranked fifth in the world, she too will see this as an opportunity to build on her five LPGA Tour victories to date. And while Minjee Lee might not have the home club entourage that usually follows her from Western Australia to Singapore each year, a second place finish in 2019 will be all the encouragement she needs to go one better this year. With safety restrictions set to remain in place until after the tournament, HSBC Women’s World Championship 2021 will be a limited attendance event. Prioritising the safety of players, officials and corporate guests, organisers are working with the Singapore Tourism Board and relevant authorities to finalise health and safety protocols for every aspect of the tournament, including adhering to prevailing safe management measures (SMMs) pre and post-event. Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, fans will still be able to look forward to the intense competition and thrilling action that the tournament has become known for over the years.
