Information and photo source : Elite Step Asia / HKRU

Information and photo source : Elite Step Asia / HKRU

  • Lutterus leads from Jin, Rawson, while Lin lurks at Clearwater Bay Open

November 2, 2017: Former PGA TOUR player David Lutterus of Australia eagled the par-5 18th to post a 6-under-par 64 and hold a one-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA TOUR-China’s Clearwater Bay Open at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. Chinese amateur Cheng Jin, who won the 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at this venue, also eagled 18 to lie one behind Lutterus and join New Zealander Campbell Rawson on 5-under, two ahead of Thailand’s Gunn Charoenkul and Josh Munn of New Zealand. Yuxin Lin, 17, won the Asia-Pacific Amateur in Wellington, New Zealand, on Sunday to earn invitations to the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship next year. Lin followed up with a 68 to share sixth place with four others. American Jon McLean recorded the first hole-in-one of the event when he aced the 164-yard 14th hole on his way to a 73. The 6-foot 5-inch Lutterus – who also had seven birdies and three bogeys – played all but four events on the first three years of PGA TOUR-China and said he was happy to be back in Hong Kong, having tied for fifth at the 2016 Clearwater Bay Open. “I’ve played well at this place, and I love this course. The eagle was a little unexpected. I can’t remember my last eagle, so it was a great way to finish. It can be a very tough tee shot on 18, but the wind died down a little bit so I got lucky,” said the Adelaide-born Lutterus, who played on the PGA TOUR in 2008 and 2010 and has lived in the U.S. for seven of the last 10 years. “It was a good day. My driving was good, and my short game was good but my irons were terrible, actually. But if you drive it well and putt well, you’re usually going to score well,” Lutterus explained. Jin played with Lin and Hong Kong No. 1 Jason Hak (75), two groups behind Lutterus, and he drew close to the leader when he also eagled the par-5 18th. The 19-year-old – who remains the only amateur to win on PGA TOUR-China – is on a good run of form after finishing fifth in last week’s Asia-Pacific Amateur, two years after winning the title at Clearwater Bay to earn a place in the 2016 Masters. “Five-under, I’ll take it. I just like this place. I putted really well,” said Jin, who is a sophomore at the University of Southern California. Jin was even par after an up-and-down first nine. He then birdied 11 and had a hat-trick of birdies from 13 before a bogey-eagle finish. “I think 13 was my turning point. I hit it left and thought I might have lost it. It barely stayed in, and it was a really bad lie, but I hit a good shot to 10 feet, made the putt and went birdie-birdie after that. “Hole 17 was a little disappointing, but 18 was good. I didn’t start that hot, but the back nine was good. I’m happy,” he added. Jin was also full of praise for his young compatriot, who wasn’t as hot on the greens but showed his power off the tee. “Yuxin’s playing great,” Jin said. “He didn’t make any putts, and he still shot 2-under. Last time I played with him, I was outdriving him and now he’s hitting it past me. It’s amazing how he improved. I’m happy for him.” Jin couldn’t remember exactly when the pair last played a competitive round together, but Lin had no problem with his memory. “Two years in Nomura Cup,” Lin said. “It’s a different game now. He hits it far – not as far as me, but he hits it far, for sure. Cheng putted pretty well today, so I need to ask him how he made all the putts. “This course definitely fits me, and I had tonnes of birdie chances. I’m hitting it really well, same as last week. My short game is actually pretty good as well. It’s just the putting.” Lin, who is home-schooled in Beijing, will play in the Masters in five months’ time following his life-changing victory last week but is currently focused on bettering his tie for 59th in last year’s Clearwater Bay Open when he finished as top amateur. “It’s really exciting at the moment. It’s such an honour to make it to the Masters. Not a lot of golfers get to play the Masters, even some guys on Tour, so I’m just really proud of myself and I really want to enjoy the process.” On both Saturday and Sunday (12.30-3.30 p.m.), the third and fourth rounds of the Clearwater Bay Open will be broadcast live in Hong Kong on Now Sports 3 (Channel 684) and the Travel Channel in China and will stream live on Sina.com and iQiyi.com.

Information and photo source : Elite Step Asia Ltd. / Formula Electric Racing (Hong Kong)

  • Hong Kong’s Jason Hak grouped with Chinese teen sensations Cheng Jin, Yuxin Lin at Clearwater Bay Op

Hong Kong No. 1 will play two rounds with two Asia-Pacific Amateur champions: Cheng Jin, who returns to the scene of his 2015 triumph, and 17-year-old Yuxin Lin, who won in New Zealand on Sunday to book his spots in two majors next year October 31, 2017: Hong Kong No. 1 Jason Hak has been grouped with Chinese teenagers Cheng Jin and Yuxin Lin – the 2015 and 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur champions respectively – in the first two rounds of the PGA TOUR-China’s Clearwater Bay Open starting Thursday. Hak, 23, is looking to win his second pro title after a breakthrough victory in Yunnan province in August and improve on his tie for 20th last year when he closed with a 63 over the scenic par-70 layout at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. Jin, 19, is competing at Clearwater Bay for the first time since winning the weather-shortened seventh Asia-Pacific Amateur two years ago when his victory was built on an opening 62. The left-handed Lin, 17, made headlines Sunday when he won the ninth Asia-Pacific Amateur in New Zealand to book spots in the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship next year. In November 2016, he was the top amateur in the inaugural Clearwater Bay Open, shooting a second-round 65 on his way to a tie for 59th. Hak was born in Hong Kong but is based between Florida and Beijing, where he has become good friends with the prodigious Lin, who is home schooled in Beijing but coached by U.S.-based Boyd Summerhays. On Tuesday, Hak and Lin practised together and paired up in the afternoon’s Par-3 Tournament, which had a total purse of U.S.$10,000. “First of all, I’m really good friends with Yuxin, and I was really happy for him. He’s a great player and a great kid,” said Hak, who even brought Lin’s spare 3-wood from Beijing to replace one the teenager broke at Royal Wellington Golf Club. “He’s born in 2000 and he’s only 17, so I’m six years older than him – I’m feeling a little old! He’s a lefty and he crushes the ball. He’s not scared to attack any flag. Even on par-4s, he likes to try to drive the green every time.” Cheng – now in his second year playing for the University of Southern California Trojans – finished fifth at the Asia-Pacific Amateur, which featured four players from China in the top five. “I just felt really proud of the team. We’ve never had so many Chinese finish so high up the leaderboard. I was pretty far back after three rounds but played well on the final day,” said Jin who remains the only amateur to secure a PGA TOUR-China title, winning the 2014 Nine Dragons Open outside Shanghai when only 16. “It’s great to be back at Clearwater Bay. Winning the AAC was definitely the biggest title of my career. I played really well that week, so it’s all good memories here and I’m excited to be back.” Hak returns to his birthplace several times a year, and the Clearwater Bay ambassador says the city still feels like home. “Playing at Clearwater Bay, even if you’re not playing well, you can enjoy yourself because it’s so beautiful. Nothing can beat coming back to Hong Kong and playing again. Everything feels right, feels at home,” said Hak who was 14 at the 2008 Hong Kong when he broke the European Tour record for youngest player to make the cut. “Everyone’s playing to win, so I was really, really happy when I finally managed to win a title,” he said of his triumph earlier this summer. “I just needed to gain more confidence, and now I need to keep improving myself for the future. The past is the past. I need to keep moving forward and see what I can do better.” Australia’s Daniel Nisbet will defend his Clearwater Bay Open title this week while other PGA TOUR-China winners include two-time champions Taewoo Kim of South Korea, Gunn Charoenkul of Thailand, and Canadians Justin Shin and Eugene Wong. On both Saturday and Sunday (12.30-3.30 p.m.), the third and fourth rounds of the Clearwater Bay Open will be broadcast live in Hong Kong on Now Sports 3 (Channel 684) and the Travel Channel in China and will stream live on Sina.com and iQiyi.com. • Hong Kong teenager Yinho Yue “really excited” to qualify for Clearwater Bay Open for second year

Hong Kong; October 30, 2017: Hong Kong teenager Yinho Yue has secured a place at the PGA TOUR-China’s Clearwater Bay Open through the Monday Qualifier for the second successive year. Yue, 17, shot a two-over-par 72 at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club to finish alone in sixth place and was among four Hong Kong players to qualify for the 72-hole tournament starting on Thursday. Fellow amateurs Cameron Lam and Terrence Ng both shot 74 to tie for 11th, while Steven Lam carded a 75 and was among two players in a share of 14th to progress via a countback. Yue, who qualified for last year’s UBS Hong Kong Open but narrowly missed out this year, was 16 when he qualified for the inaugural Clearwater Bay Open via an eight-way playoff for the final four qualifying spots. The Shanghai-based schoolboy is looking to build on the experience gained last November when he played with Korean pro Kookhyan Kim and Chinese amateur Yixin Xing, shooting rounds of 77 and 71 to miss the cut by four. “I feel really excited. I’ve been looking forward to this tournament all year because this is the only pro event I’ll play this year. I really like playing in the pro tournaments – the atmosphere, the environment we’re in – and just learn and gain experience,” said Yue, who flew back to Shanghai on Monday night to attend school for two days and will return on Wednesday. “The first thing I noticed when I played last year was the pace of play, especially the pro. He was pretty experienced on tour and really fast paced. I was a little uncomfortable with the speed, but I learned a lot from how the pros play. Even though I didn’t do too well, it was really good exposure for me.” Chinese Taipei teenager Lawrence Ting led the scoring with a 69, one ahead of England’s Mathew Webb, while Canada’s Richard Jung and Americans Ryann Ree and Craig Crandall shot 71 to share third place. Ting, who played in the European Tour’s Volvo China Open in 2015 when he was 15, had to recover from a tough start in windy conditions, starting bogey, bogey and double bogey to lie 4-over after three holes. However, his short game and experience of the course helped him recover and post the best score of the day. “I actually struggled on the front nine, especially the first three holes. After that, I started to be more stable. My short game was really working today and saved a lot of scores,” said Ting who will making his second appearance in a PGA TOUR-China event, having played in last November’s Putian Open in Fujian province. “I think I’ve played three amateur tournaments at Clearwater Bay so I’ve probably played 12 rounds here in total. I’ve played a few pro events at home in Chinese Taipei and also in Australia, at the Victoria Open.” Recently crowned Asia-Pacific Amateur champion Yuxin Lin of China and his compatriot Cheng Jin, who won the 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur at Clearwater Bay, are other notable amateurs in the field. Hong Kong No. 1 Jason Hak will spearhead home hopes, with his confidence boosted by winning his first pro title in August. Australia’s Daniel Nisbet will defend his title while other PGA TOUR-China winners include two-time champions Taewoo Kim of South Korea and Gunn Charoenkul of Thailand, and Canadians Justin Shin and Eugene Wong. Brazilian Lucas Lee, who played PGA TOUR-China in 2014, the Web.com Tour in 2015 and the PGA TOUR in 2015-16, will make his Clearwater Bay Open debut. Since 2003, The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club has been committed to its Community Outreach Program, an initiative aimed at strengthening neighbourhood ties, preserving the environment and upholding family values while working with charity partners to organise and raise funds for different sectors of people in the community. • Yuxin Lin plays Clearwater Bay after winning spots at Masters, The Open The 17-year-old Chinese prod

Hong Kong; October 30, 2017: Chinese sensation Yuxin Lin, 17, will compete in this week’s Clearwater Bay Open days after his life-changing victory in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) in New Zealand. Lin, who only turned 17 on October 12, was the top amateur at last year’s Clearwater Bay Open but returns to Hong Kong a far more experienced and accomplished player after a year in which he has shone in several pro events and now captured one of the biggest titles in amateur golf. The winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur has always earned a spot in the Masters the following year, but this year, for the first time, the champion also secured a spot in The Open, which will be held at Carnoustie in 2018. “It was an amazing feeling, probably the best feeling I’ve ever had. I’m just really excited that I made it to the Masters and The Open. I was a little speechless but just really excited,” said Lin, one of four Chinese players in the top five at Royal Wellington Golf Club. “I’m quite confident going to Clearwater Bay, and I hope I have another good week in Hong Kong. I’ll definitely be more confident after the win in New Zealand. I’ve built up a lot of confidence over the last three weeks.” Lin was only 16 when he made the cut at the European Tour’s Shenzhen International in April and this month finished seventh in the European Challenge Tour’s Hainan Open and recorded an albatross on his 72nd hole at the Asian Tour’s Macao Open. On Sunday in New Zealand, Lin led by one going into the final round of the AAC and was level with countryman Andy Zhang with two holes to play. Lin then drove the green on the 361-yard, par-4 17th and eagled the par-5 18th to close with a 6-under-par 65 and secure a three-stroke victory over Zhang. Last month, he made his Japan Golf Tour debut, and in late November he will play in the Australian Open for the second time. In November 2016, Lin tied for 59th in the inaugural Clearwater Bay Open after rounds of 78-65-74-68. He believes he can improve on that this week. “It’s a great golf course with beautiful views, but there are a couple of tough holes with tricky tee shots; especially 15, and 18 are pretty tough when they’re into the wind,” said Lin. “Last year I had a couple of bad holes in the first round. I had a triple bogey on 15 when I hit a pretty good tee shot, but [the ball] hit a sprinkler and I couldn’t find it. “My long game definitely helps at Clearwater Bay, but you still need to have a good short game and make putts,” he added. Lin’s compatriot Cheng Jin, who finished fifth at this year’s AAC, is also in the field two years after winning the AAC at Clearwater Bay in 2015. The 19-year-old remains the only amateur to have won a PGA TOUR-China event, taking the 2014 Nine Dragons Open outside Shanghai.

Information and photo source : Elite Step Asia / HKRU
